Release Date: January 25, 2012
Cover Date: March 2012

Story: Tony Bedard
Pencils: Tyler Kirkham
Inks: Matt “Batt” Banning

Kyle Rayner and his motley crew of other Lanterns split up into pairs to investigate the Orrery. Arkillo and Saint Walker find what appears to be Tamaran, while Munk and Fatality apparently find themselves on Okaara. Meanwhile, Bleez tries to report to Atrocitus back on Ysmault, but he cannot understand her, so he tosses her into the Blood Ocean. Finally, Kyle and Glomulus locate a strange church, where a clergyman denounces them as servants of the Beast. There’s a statue of the Beast inside, and it’s Larfleeze! However, Kyle and Glomulus have other problems ahead: the Orrery’s protector, Invictus, has awoken inside the station’s sun.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #5 had plenty of action, but also some very good character development. Seeing Larfleeze cast as a Satan analogue is a fascinating twist; I can’t wait to see what his history with Invictus is, especially since it could be a rivalry spanning billions of years.

While we’re on the subject of Orange Lanterns, there seems to be more to Glomulus than meets the eye. We’ve always thought that Orange Lantern Corps are just constructs made by Larfleeze (which Kyle vocalizes), but Glomulus hints that he might be more than that. Perhaps Orange Lanterns keep their minds after death, even in construct form?

We see that the events of this issue take place before Red Lanterns #3. That explains why Bleez in New Guardians hasn’t regained her intelligence yet, and adds another reason for Atrocitus to dunk her in the Blood Ocean, though it would’ve been nice if the missing red ring has at least been mentioned in that issue.

Lastly, Fatality and Munk. Fatality explains what we already know: that atoning for her dark past was what drove her to join the Star Sapphires. (Though she incorrectly refers to them as the “Star Sapphire Corps.” Must’ve been a typo.) She wonders about Munk, though, as he’s clearly a trained fighter…but working for the seemingly serene Indigo Tribe. Other Tribesmen, like Indigo-1, seem to have forgotten their past selves, but the look on Munk’s face implies that he remembers all too well. This is likely just a hook for the upcoming “Secret of the Indigo Tribe” story arc in Green Lantern (Vol. 5), but I hope we see some of the ramifications in New Guardians.

When the Orrery first showed up, myself and many other fans poked fun at it by saying it looks like a solar system model you’d build for school. As it turns out, it actually is a model, but for what purpose we do not yet know. Well done, Tony Bedard, for heading off criticism with an intruiging plot point!

Let’s finish up by talking about the art. Tyler Kirkham handled all of the pencils this time (Harvey Tolibau helped out with the last few issues), and this gave the entire book much more consistency. Kirkham also flexed his artistic muscle by drawing many different environments; from the desolation of Ysmault to the jungles of Okaara, his linework is distinct and gives each world its own personality. He really made the Orrery look like the vast collection of worlds it represents, and I can’t wait to see more.

Then, of course, there’s his Invictus design. We’ve all seen the glowing armored cliché before, but in this case, it at least makes sense; he emerged from a damned star, and likely draws his power from the same source. His followers worship him as an archangel, so perhaps he’s laid claim to some divine power as well. (I doubt it.) We’ll just have to see what this demigod has in store for our ring slingers.

Story: Paul Kupperberg and Len Wein
Cover: Gil Kane

Hal Jordan has left the Green Lantern Corps, but life goes on as usual for the other Lanterns on Oa. When a white dwarf star fragment hits, a few Corpsmen take care of the problem, but return to find the Citadel in ruins. Worse yet, something’s drained the Central Power Battery, leaving only six Lantern with fully charged rings! Three Guardians were also kidnapped, so the small Corps takes off to find them. The Lanterns split up in pairs, but each finds a seemingly insane Guardian at the end of their journey. In truth, the evil Maaldor the Almighty has controlled them in order to escape from his interdimensional prison. He easily defeats the Green Lanterns, but Arkis Chummuck knows how to take him down for good. Drawing on the combined energies of the other Lanterns, he grabs Maaldor and forces his ring to overload, killing them both in the ensuing explosion.

The story here is nothing special: mystery villain controls the good guys, easily defeats our heroes, and then one brave soul makes the ultimate sacrifice in order to save the day. What makes this issue a great read is the fantastic Gil Kane art.

From the bold linework to his renderings of the alien Lanterns (the only human one is John Stewart, and he only makes a cameo appearance in the last panel), Kane’s expressive art is a treat in every single panel. Maaldor is depicted as an incredibly ugly brute in comparison to the clean, heroic forms of the Green Lanterns. (Go ahead, make any comment you want about Katma Tui’s “form.” I’ll wait.)

On every page, the heroism of the Corps is never in question. As other Lanterns fall to their apparent deaths due to their rings running out, the situation becomes more desperate, and Kane expertly conveys this by quickly intercutting back to the main action as the last few Lanterns seemingly fail in their tasks to stop the insane Guardians. These art techniques may seem simple, but they’re incredibly effective.

Art like this probably wouldn’t stand up to modern audiences. It’s up to us classic era fans to keep it alive!

Release Date: January 18, 2012
Cover Date: March 2012

Story: Peter Tomasi
Pencils: Fernando Pasarin
Inks: Scott Hanna
Cover: Andy Kubert

Guy Gardner puts together a badass team of Green Lanterns, and the Martian Manhunter clues them in as to the true origins of the Keepers. The Lanterns realize that since the Keepers are immune to their rings, they need to make them feel afraid and fight with conventional arms. They retrieve two fear-casting Sinestro Corpsmen from the Sciencells and hijack a Khundian weapons transport. Now the Green Lanterns are armed to the teeth and ready to take the fight to the Keepers’ world.

Ugh. This issue was all kinds of awful. Not because of the basic plot, either; the Keepers’ true origin and the dick move the Guardians pulled on their world was just fine, albeit unsurprising given the blue immortals’ actions in recent years. Also interesting was the revelation that Green Lantern power batteries are not sent to a pocket universe, but to a distant world within the regular universe. The art looked fantastic, too; each panel was rife with cool details, and Fernando Pasarin’s double-page splash of the Keepers’ history was the high point of the entire book.

What made this issue an eye-rolling turd were the rampant errors and incredibly hamfisted homages. If you thought that “Av-eneg” nonsense from the last issue was bad, then buckle up.

First of all, the “Mean Machine.” Each of those guys is based off of a classic action movie actor, right down to their faces and builds. That’s okay, I guess, but then their names are thinly-veiled versions of their real world counterparts. Flint? Bronchuk? Come on! Does Peter Tomasi really think that his readers are so stupid that they wouldn’t get it just by looking at this crowd? At least with Ermey a few years ago, the character looked nothing like R. Lee Ermey. Tributes like this are more meaningful if they’re tastefully done. Shoving our faces in it by making everything blindingly obvious is insulting. Not only that, but the character design of these guys was just boring. They’re just wearing regular clothes with a Green Lantern symbol slapped on them!

It gets worse with Fat Man and Little Boy. Aside from the fact that one is fat, and the other is little — wow, how original! — they’re aliens. Why would their names be English terms? The real offense, though, is that they’re named after the nuclear bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima during World War II. That’s in very poor taste, and it’s compounded by the fact that within the story, the pair will also be used as powerful bombs. Not cool at all.

This issue was also rife with other nits that were equally annoying, yet easily could have been avoided. The Martian Manhunter had made clear in issue #4 that he’d wipe Guy’s memories of their meeting. But now, Guy remembers J’onn without a problem. Next, it’s said that the batteries are retrieved through a “temporal conduit.” The correct term would be a spatial conduit; the batteries aren’t traveling through time!

Then there’s the matter of the Khundian weapons. You’d think a spacefaring warrior race would have some cool rayguns or phasers or something…but no. As Orion Pax of the Green Lantern Corps message board pointed out…the guns the Corps retrieves are all Earth-made firearms!

Finally, that bit about a “force of will” being encoded in the Keepers’ DNA makes absolutely no sense. Not only is willpower not an emotion (no matter how much DC Comics says otherwise), it’s also not something that can be hardcoded into beings’ cells. Give me a break.

It was nice to see the story move forward a bit, even though it was predictable, but the poor writing and crappy homages just sank this issue.

As you know, Sinestro has been a Green Lantern since he was mysteriously chosen by a green ring in Green Lantern (Vol. 4) #67. Since then, he’s been the star of Green Lantern Vol. 5, and Geoff Johns has stated that Sinestro will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Aside from the obvious fact that I think it’s bullshit that Hal Jordan is dumped in the backseat of his own goddamned book (which he has been since 2007!), I don’t mind the concept of Sinestro returning to the Green Lantern Corps. Johns has done an excellent job of making Sinestro a much more interesting character over the past seven years, and seeing the arrogant villain thrust into a role he was once comfortable with but had grown to despise makes for some fantastic comics.

What I don’t like is that the “New 52″ reboot will likely be used as an excuse to whitewash or erase most of Sinestro’s evil deeds. Johns did the exact same thing with Hal in Green Lantern: Rebirth, and Hal’s “crimes” were a drop in the ocean compared to what Sinestro has done. Given Johns’ reliance on retcons, there’s a lot of precedent for throwing away Sinestro’s history.

Without doing so, the choice of Sinestro as a Green Lantern just doesn’t make sense. He’s not just a villain; he’s a supervillain. The man is quite literally responsible for the deaths of billions, not to mention the conquest of entire worlds, committing genocide, and the creation of an evil army. That just doesn’t fly with being a Green Lantern, no matter which continuity you may prefer.

So, in order for any of these recent stories to work, a lot of those past sins would have to be wiped clean. That MadGod Sector 3600 business? I doubt it ever happened. Even recent stuff, like “The Sinestro Corps War,” is likely to be dramatically altered. My guess is that it’ll be retconned as a small, localized conflict rather than the original intergalactic bloodbath (if it happened at all). I’d be surprised if we even get an explanation as to why a green ring chose Sinestro again!

I should also point out that Sinestro’s path to redemption undercuts the entire rationale for Green Lantern: Rebirth. Just like Sinestro, Hal was a hero before going rogue. Thus far in the current comics, Sinestro is having to work his way back up and redeem himself. Hal, on the other hand, was retconned into the perfect hero by having all of his foibles be the fault of a giant space bug. If Sinestro can redeem himself, why couldn’t Hal? Unless, of course, Sinestro’s legacy of villainy will be blamed on Parallax as well. That’ll make his sins that much easier to expunge, as nothing will be his fault anymore. Ugh.

But I digress. Rather than retcons, what kind of explanation for Sinestro’s return to the Green Lantern Corps would I prefer? Instead of Sinestro’s horrible crimes being erased, keep them in continuity…and have his current Green Lantern status be a forced penance. And as to why the ring chose him, and is stuck on his finger…that’s the work of the Guardians. They’re simply lying to the rest of the Corps about it, as they’ve done countless times before. Rings can no longer choose their wielders automatically due to Mogo’s destruction, and some intelligence clearly guided it to Sinestro’s hand. Why not the Guardians, in order to make Sinestro pay? While he’s stuck with the green ring, Sinestro wouldn’t be able to use any yellow rings, either. We’ve already seen that his own Corps has marked him for death, so if the Guardians are responsible, they’re punishing Sinestro and tearing apart his army in the same stroke.

This is all just wishful thinking. I’m worried that we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment if we expect any satisfying answers, or for something truly great to come out of Sinestro’s new role. Regardless, all we can do is wait.

Arsona and friends try to use their rings against Sinestro, but of course they won’t work. Sinestro summons his power battery, and the group uses it to help break free. Along with Hal Jordan, Sinestro is finally able to shut down the Sinestro Corps Central Power Battery, which knocks out all of the evil Corpsmen on Korugar. Some of the citizens hail him for saving them, but Sinestro admits that he does not deserve their praise. Arsona tells him to leave, and never return. Sinestro sends Hal back to Earth without a power battery and returns to Oa, where the Guardians are not pleased. They plan to release the First Lantern from the Chamber of Shadows to lead their Third Army, though the other horrors in the Chamber may not like it. Meanwhile, Hal reconciles with Carol. (What a shock.)

The Sinestro Corps brought down?! Wasn’t quite expecting that, but in true comic book fashion, there’s an easy out right there in the pages. Sure, Sinestro disabled their Central Power Battery and rendered hundreds of Corpsmen comatose, but he states that there’s still loads of active members still roaming the galaxy. I’m assuming that they’re still drawing power from their personal batteries. It was mentioned that Arkillo is incommunicado; that’s a nice reference to Green Lantern: New Guardians, but if someone’s not reading that book, it doesn’t seem forced or out-of-place. Well done.

With Hal claiming a power ring can’t be broken by its user, and Sinestro bragging that he’s done it not once but twice, we’re given yet another example of how much Hal sucks compared to his former mentor. I really don’t like that. I know Geoff Johns has a raging fanboy hard-on for Sinestro, and his work in revamping the character deserves tremendous credit, but this is getting ridiculous. It seems that every other Green Lantern is far more skilled with the power ring than Hal; it makes you wonder why he’s considered to be so powerful in the first place!

Carol giving Hal another chance wasn’t so hot, ether. I know their romance is longstanding, but after the shitstorm she gave Hal in past issues, she’s back in his arms in no time. She even mentions this is his tenth chance! Carol was often portrayed as a strong, independent woman, but this reduces her to a stereotypical female who needs and is defined by her man.

Let’s move on to the other good plot points. The big name drop here was the Chamber of Shadows. We’ve heard the First Lantern mentioned before (and possibly seen), but this Chamber is new. This serves a few purposes: one, it’s naturally the prison for the First Lantern, but by mentioning that the Chamber contains other denizens, it gives Johns a hook for future stories if he so chooses. (And retcons, but that’s to be expected by now.)

Doug Mahnke’s linework was great, and I love the creepy Sinestro Corps members he’s dreamt up. The Korugarians looks a bit too generic, with Arsona being the only standout, but the massive battle scenes were expertly rendered. Even the little details stood out; for example, when flying back to Oa, Sinestro’s got the Central Power Battery and evil Corpsmen locked up…and you can also see Mongul imprisoned separately below the Battery. Mongul was trapped in the Battery in Green Lantern (Vol. 4) #46, and it’s nice to see that little detail has not been forgotten.

Overall, Green Lantern (Vol. 5) #5 was a very good issue. The story seemed to end here, but modern comics do love their six-part tales, so we’ll see what next month brings.

(This review is being posted a bit late due to family obligations last week.)

Release Date: January 4, 2012
Cover Date: March 2012

Story: Peter Milligan
Pencils: Ed Benes and Diego Bernard
Cover: Ed Benes

Atrocitus blames Bleez for Krona’s missing body, but she insists that she’s got nothing to do with it. After beating her down, he orders her to retrieve Ratchet, Skallox, and Zilius Zox from the Blood Ocean. Together, the group will continue the search, and Atrocitus is assaulted by a shadowy figure. Meanwhile, the origin stories of Skallox and Ratchet are wrapped up, and a red power ring finally makes it way to Earth. It chooses John Moore as a new Red Lantern after he watches his brother savagely beaten to death by the police.

The plot continues to amble along in Red Lanterns, with very little development. Atrocitus’ monologues continues to be rather painful, and the dialogue doesn’t fare much better; Bleez claiming that “the universe can be a real bitch” as a particularly awful standout. There was no origin for Zilius Zox, and there’s still no explanation was to why Red Lantern Ratchet looks so different from his former self. I know I said I wouldn’t mention this anymore, but I have no choice here: Red Lanterns #5 certainly sets a new record for gratuitous Bleez ass shots. There’s seven, including the cover! I couldn’t help but laugh.

All this crappy stuff aside, there was one great moment in this issue, though: when Ratchet points out that both good and evil folks feel great rage, so Red Lanterns shouldn’t try to claim some sort of moral high ground. Ratchet is absolutely correct: Atrocitus’ self-righteous anger nonwithstanding, who the hell appointed the Red Lantern Corps to be judge, jury, and executioner? This could lead to some serious dissension within the ranks. Atrocitus does not tolerate shit like that, but a civil war among the Red Lanterns would certainly make for a great story. If that’s the case…then get on with it!

As it stands right now, there’s just not enough meat here. I can see this book ending within the next year, if not sooner; perhaps after the upcoming “Corps War” Green Lantern crossover event teased by Geoff Johns. Putting this dog down would be a mercy killing; if you want to do more Red Lantern stories, a miniseries would be far more appropriate.

Story: Ron Marz
Cover: Scott Kolins and George Pérez

Kyle Rayner needs to get some art samples to a Japanese client, but he missed the last delivery truck. While grabbing a quick cup of coffee at Radu’s, he notices metal objects in the café acting strangely. Meanwhile, Ray Terrill and his girlfriend are nearly crushed by a falling metal statue! Kyle heads to Japan in his Green Lantern guise in order to deliver his art, and discovers Doctor Polaris there tearing up Tokyo. He saves Japanese superheroine Arashi from falling to her death, but Kyle soon discovers that Polaris’ power levels have increased substantially. The Ray also arrives to fight off this new threat, and to their horror, the heroes learn that Polaris has set in motion a massive tidal wave that’ll level Japan! Kyle speeds to the epicenter to deal with the wave before it grows too large, and the Ray tries to hold Polaris off. When Kyle returns, he figures out that Polaris has a new personality developing within him, and it’s vying for control. Green Lantern and the Ray use this info to confuse the hell out of Polaris, essentially shorting him out. The Ray heads for home, and Kyle personally delivers his artwork…to Arashi’s civilian identity.

I came across this little gem while digging through my back issues, and I had completely forgotten that Scott Kolins handled the penciling chores. As expected, his action sequences are dynamic and loaded with. The more character-focused scenes — such as Kyle freaking out over missing the delivery truck and the companion panel with Ray apologizing to his girlfriend for being late — are crisp and expressive.

But let’s talk story. The circumstances bringing Green Lantern and the Ray together seemed a bit forced, but once they did team up against Doctor Polaris it made perfect sense. I’m also glad the book didn’t fall into the typical “two heroes hate each other, then grudgingly team up” formula. Green Lantern and the Ray recognized each other’s strengths almost immediately, and that enabled to work much better as a team.

I dig the warring personalities aspect of Doctor Polaris; without that, he’s just another Magneto clone sans gravitas. Even though he’d dispensed with the Neal Emerson personality, the idea that Polaris was so used to dual personalities that he’d unconsciously create another one was very cool. The only downside to this is that the story was resolved a bit too quickly; it even seems that a panel or two was missing.

To the best of my knowledge, Arashi never appeared again, which is a shame. I’m all for heroes operating outside of America, and international superfolks rarely get enough credit.

There were a lot of random Green Lantern one-shots during the Kyle era, and Green Lantern Plus was one of more fun ones to read despite its flaws. Give it a read!

Larfleeze and Sayd attack the Guardians, and Kyle Rayner rallies the other Corps representatives to help. Ganthet tries to get through to Kyle, but the veteran Green Lantern senses it’s a trap. He’s proven correct, as the group teleports to Okaara and Sayd tells him what really happened with the stolen rings. Someone tried to steal Larfleeze’s ring, but he was able to resist it. The same unknown force stole the other rings and sent them after Kyle, so Larfleeze sent Glomulus along to get answers. Sayd herself ventured to the center of the galaxy, where a supermassive white hole disgorged a gigantic structure from another universe. The space station is the size of a star system, and somewhere inside, the ring thief awaits.

The revelation of a new villain for Kyle and crew to fight is a welcome change from the recycled villains we’ve dealt with over the past few years in the Green Lantern series, and I’m hoping this one won’t be completely tied to the emotional spectrum like all of the others. Perhaps their new foe just wants power, plain and simple? He (or she) could be some being who wants to wield all of those rings like the goddamned Mandarin, caring little for any of that emotional nonsense. Now that would be cool to see!

Kyle apparently has some residual energy from the other six Corps left in him, as he knocks down Ganthet with their combined powers. Ganthet once again stated that Kyle is unique for some reason, and I’m sure this plot point will be extrapolated upon as the series progresses. Let’s just hope it’s not something stupid.

The mystery villain’s star system base (the Orrery) is cool in concept, but the art for it looks cheesy. It looks like those crappy motorized solar system models we used to build in elementary school! Perhaps that was the point, but the visuals just failed to deliver the desired impact as a result. If we had seen a glimpse of the mystery villain, at least, that might have improved things a bit.

The highlight of this issue was that Larfleeze has finally returned as a serious threat, just as I’d hoped. He and Sayd beat the piss out of the Guardians, and as his Guardian was the one who discovered the oncoming threat, the Orange Lantern is large and in charge. For someone obsessed with material gain, Larfleeze showed remarkable foresight and intelligence. We need more of this!

Other cool moments included Arkillo’s healing due to Saint Walker, and the attempted healing of Bleez. The latter is a bit confusing, though, as she’s already regained her senses in the pages of Red Lanterns. However, if this story takes place before her rebirth at the hands of Atrocitus, then how do you explain her constant presence on Ysmault in Red Lanterns? She’s never been missing.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #4 was good, with only a few stumbles that the next issue can hopefully recover from. I’ll leave you with a blatant art error that I’m sure everyone else has laughed at: the cover. Larfleeze is holding an indigo power battery, but the Indigo Tribe use staves as their power sources, not lantern-shaped batteries like the other Corps. In fact, Munk is clearly wielding his staff in the background!

Release Date: December 21, 2011
Cover Date: February 2012

Story: Peter Tomasi
Pencils: Fernando Pasarin
Inks: Scott Hanna
Cover: Andy Kubert

The Green Lanterns are no match for their mysterious enemies, and even though John tries to surrender, the villains feel that they need to be taught a lesson. To prove their point, one of them kills a sloppily-dressed Green Lantern in cold blood. The captive Lanterns are teleported elsewhere, while Guy Gardner interrogates a prisoner back on Oa. Martian Manhunter arrives on behalf of Stormwatch, and discovers that the enemies are known as Keepers, and they were responsible for taking care of Green Lantern power batteries stored in the pocket dimension. Something’s really pissed them off, though, and they’re coming for the Central Power Battery.

This issue would’ve been a lot better except for a few stutters. The biggest quirk is that Green Lanterns were ordered to no longer use the pocket dimension to store their personal batteries…except that we saw Sinestro yank a battery out of the pocket dimension in Green Lantern (Vol. 5) #3.

Next, it’s made clear that the Keepers’ weapons only work for them, just like power rings only work for those specifically chosen. This is also wrong: as we’ve seen in various Green Lantern comics over the past few years, anyone can wield any ring as long as they feel the proper emotion. During “War of the Green Lanterns” in particular, the four Earth Green Lanterns slipped other rings on and off without any trouble.

Then there’s silly stuff like the Star Treaty of Av-Eneg. Oh wow, it’s “Geneva” spelled backwards, like the Geneva Conventions. Yeah, we get it. Sheesh.

On to more fun things. The design of the Keepers looks great, and vaguely reminiscent of the Sinestro Corps member Slushh. The skeleton beneath a clear skin motif is nothing new, but the bits of musculature and the not-quite-human facial features set them apart.

It seems like the Keepers are being set up as a race that was used and abused by the Guardians, then simply forgotten once their usefulness came to an end. (Due to “Emerald Twilight,” maybe?) Or, perhaps the very act of no longer storing the power batteries in the pocket dimension is beginning to do serious damage to the Keepers’ home. Either way, it’s making for an excellent story, hiccups nonwithstanding.

Green Lantern Corps (Vol. 3) #4 is also our first taste of other “New 52″ retcons and reboots actually affecting the Green Lantern books. Guy Gardner has no clue who the Martian Manhunter is, and his memory of their meeting is erased at its conclusion. This is a bit of a shame, as the past friendship between Guy and J’onn was always cool. I’ve also got a feeling that the Guardians were well aware of J’onn’s “intrusion,” and likely permitted it. They’re almost certainly aware of Stormwatch’s existence, since they work towards the same goals (albeit on a universal scale).

Things are moving along at a fine pace, and I can’t wait to see what the next issue brings. The Keepers are great antagonists, and there’s sure to be a lot more to them than just former custodians pissed at their old employers.
